How good are affiliate schemes for generating money thru Google? Are there other good companies to try as well?

I think I have a very good website idea about tourism which could advertise over 1000 forms of accommodation & ought to be an excellent 'shop window' for hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, etc. Do Google (or any other recommended businesses perhaps) give a decent percentage on SUCCESSFUL web links i.e. a link which DOES create a bookings at Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, Self Catering accommodation - even Camping & Caravan Sites? My website will also feature 'Things to see & do' i.e. local entertainment as well as 'Places to Eat AND Drink' and 'Transport' & Miscellaneous other things like shops or Car Insurance too. Do affiliate schemes with Google or whoever pay fairly well IF you can deliver a pretty good success rate on purchases via your website? I think I have an essentially 'good' idea which isn't in competition with any other website (at least in what it does) therefore it should 'corner the market' in the way eBay cornered the market in on-line auctions. It won't be THAT big but it should be fairly big. The reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking of making revenue via MY pay per click income or using an affiliate as I believe I have excellent sales capabilities. Please tell me if you have personal experience of affiliate schemes & what level of success / income it achieves & any other tips you may have regarding revenue streams via a popular website.
