What type of insurance covers brachymetatarsia surgery (toe lengthening surgery)?
My cousin has something called brachymetatarsia on only one foot and only one toe.
i am trying to figure out what insurance will cover the toe lengthening surgery, because later on in life the person who has it might not even be able to walk on that foot since all the pressure is on the third toe and the toe seems to get damaged over the years.
Any insurance that would cover it? since it is not really "plastic surgery" it does mess your foot up later on in life and it does cause pain. i heard that insurance covers it but i have no idea which one.
Thank you all so much for the help.

Better Answer
There's not any one insurance company you should be shopping for. Each company offers thousands of different plans, and every plan has different coverage. If your cousin is insured through his employer, he doesn't get to pick his plan; he'll just need to call and see if this surgery is covered. If he's currently shopping for a new plan, he needs to find a health insurance broker to help him through the process. They don't cost the consumer anything, and they have a great understanding of the system.
Insurance normally DOES cover preventative surgeries, as long as they're medically necessary. It sounds like this one is. They may need further information from his doctor before they will approve it, but just keep pushing and if 'no' is the first answer, don't accept it.

No one is going to cover "preventative" surgery.
They don't cover things that are going to effect you in ten, twenty or thirty years because most likely you won't be covered by them at that time....and if his feet started bothering him now they would say "whoops, we can't cover that.....it's a pre-existing condition!".
